PacketCable™
PacketCable is a CableLabs-led initiative to develop interoperable interface specifications for delivering advanced, real-time multimedia services over two-way cable plant. Built on top of the industry's highly successful DOCSIS® cable modem infrastructure (version 1.1 or greater), PacketCable networks use Internet protocol (IP) technology to enable a wide range of multimedia services, such as IP telephony, multimedia conferencing, interactive gaming, and general multimedia applications. Working with CableLabs member companies and technology suppliers, the PacketCable project addresses issues such as device interoperability and product compliance with the PacketCable specifications.

While no CableLabs member company is obligated to purchase PacketCable-compliant products, it is anticipated that the majority of network components purchased will be PacketCable compliant.
The PacketCable Certification Testing Program
  • The PacketCable Certification Testing Program assists cable operators in assessing vendor products built to PacketCable specifications. The program is not about approving devices for retail sale; rather it is a method of gauging conformance with the PacketCable specifications, interoperability with other PacketCable-compliant products and compatibility with the DOCSIS access network.
  • Test plans and the test environment used to conduct this testing are simply one method for measuring compliance. As the method employed by CableLabs, those test plans and test environment are initially made available to the PacketCable NDA community and, ultimately, to the public at large.
The objectives of the PacketCable Certification Testing Program are to:
  • Establish PacketCable-compliant products in the marketplace,
  • Validate the PacketCable architecture and refine the specifications if necessary,
  • Drive necessary Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) to support the first two goals, and
  • Provide valuable feedback to the MSO community.
Benefits to Cable Operators/Consumers
  • Cable operators will be able to offer a myriad of services, including basic and extended telephony services delivered more efficiently and at lower cost over the broadband cable access network.
  • Consumers will be able to enjoy a variety of new services.
